Isabella C.

The student behind the story
Isabella attends an international school and speaks fluent English. Her mother approached me to support her writing and organisational skills. We’ve now worked together for over 1.5 years. All our lessons were online.
When she found out that we would finally meet in Hong Kong, we were both incredibly excited. She ran toward me the moment she saw me.
She’s creative, energetic, and imaginative. Her emotions show clearly on her face. When academic pressure builds, anxiety can surface suddenly, and there were lessons where she cried.

When Emotion Meets Learning
Once, during an English-speaking session, she shared that she was grateful I had forgiven her for a past mistake.
Early on, she had secretly used her phone during class. Instead of scolding her, I asked, “Do you feel tired in lessons? Is it hard to concentrate?”
She said yes. We added short breaks into lessons. Her focus improved noticeably.
At other times, she cried because schoolwork felt overwhelming. I listened, then suggested, “Let’s use five minutes to write a small part together. I’m here.” The task was completed within minutes: a reminder that most fears never actually happen.
Growth beyond grades

Before tutoring, her average score was around 3 out of 8.
Over time, her results steadily rose to 5–6 out of 8, with clear improvement across analysing, organising ideas, producing text, and language use.
When asked to report her learning progress at school, she shared her improvement in English and thanked me, her English tutor, for the teaching.
More importantly, her confidence grew. She became calmer, more proactive, and more independent.
反思 Reflection
Students cannot be rushed into maturity. When we first understand their emotions, affirm their value, and then guide them forward, confidence grows, and academic progress follows.

Yes. Isabella attends an international school in Hong Kong. We worked together for over 1.5 years, entirely online. I am familiar with international school English curricula, including writing analysis, idea organisation, and language use.
I believe in addressing emotions before academics. When Isabella cried due to academic pressure, I would listen first, then break the task into smaller steps and complete them together. Once emotions settled, learning followed naturally.
Isabella’s experience shows that online tutoring can be equally effective. All our lessons were online, and her English scores improved from an average of 3 to 5–6 out of 8, with noticeable growth in confidence and focus.
