The Idea Behind the Gathering
After nearly 18 years of teaching English, I’ve worked with countless students. One day, I thought it would be meaningful to organise a student party and meet everyone in one go, especially since I hadn’t seen some of them for years and my current students were feeling stressed about their upcoming exams.
Mixing different generations of students felt like a wonderful idea. They could relax a little, connect with each other, and hear real stories and tips from those who had once walked the same path.
Many of my former students have since gone abroad for their studies or migration after achieving their IELTS goals. It meant a lot to me to meet the students who are based in Hong Kong. This students’ gathering is something I had wished for a long time, and seeing everyone in one place quietly fulfilled my long-held dream.
Tutoring is a business, but becoming friends with my students is an unexpected yet deeply meaningful bonus I could ever ask for.

How Time Passes: Watching Students Grow
My very first student was there that day. We’ve known each other for 15 years. She was a Primary 6 girl when I first taught her, and now she’s a certified accountant. Moments like this remind me how quickly time passes.
One former student even came with her daughter. When I taught her, she was still so young. Now she’s a mother. Seeing that made my heart very full.
I also reunited with a student who once struggled with English and scored an E in her public exam. She kept trying, took the IELTS multiple times, and eventually earned a high score. Today, she’s a lawyer. Her journey is one I’ll always remember.
Nothing brings me more joy than seeing my students succeed in life. Some have gotten engaged, married, or welcomed children during their tutoring years; being part of those milestones is incredibly touching.
Technology Can Never Replace Human Connection
Technology can never replace the care and connection shared between people. Students face stress, doubt, procrastination, and frustration. As a teacher, I know encouragement, patience, and emotional support matter just as much as teaching the content. The English exam is just one hurdle in a much longer journey, and I’m honoured to walk that journey with them.
Teachers Are Human Too
I still remember the phone call from a student who was so excited when I received my Oxford master’s offer that she rang me immediately to celebrate with me. Teachers are humans too. I have days when I feel low or overwhelmed, and my usually playful students pick it up instantly. They feel worried and try to comfort me. They care about me.
And when my students feel frustrated and cry in front of me, I listen because I want them to know I am someone they can trust. We quietly give each other strength, and that is my sense of purpose. I feel loved. I feel respected. Thank you, my students.
後記 P.S.
P.S. A small fun detail: my student was picked up by a Ferrari supercar that day. Definitely the highlight of the day.

Polly has been a private English tutor for nearly 18 years. Her students span a wide range of ages and backgrounds, including primary and secondary school students, adults preparing for IELTS, university students applying for postgraduate programmes, and professionals seeking to meet English language requirements for overseas licensing, including doctors, lawyers, and speech therapists.

Yes. Polly’s very first student was a Primary 6 girl when they met — she is now a certified accountant, and they have known each other for over 15 years. Another former student, who was once so young, attended the reunion as a mother with her daughter. Polly believes that tutoring is a business, but the genuine friendships formed with students are an unexpected and deeply meaningful bonus.
Yes. One of Polly’s former students scored an E in her public English exam. She kept trying, sat the IELTS multiple times, and eventually achieved a high score. Today, she is a lawyer. Polly firmly believes that your starting point does not determine your destination. With genuine motivation and targeted guidance, improvement is inevitable.
Students face stress, self-doubt, procrastination, and frustration throughout their learning journey — these are real challenges. Polly believes that encouragement, patience, and emotional support matter just as much as academic instruction. When students cry in lessons, she listens. When they feel low, she walks with them. The English exam is just one hurdle in a much longer journey, and she is honoured to be part of it.
Beyond one-to-one lessons, Polly periodically organises English speaking sessions, allowing students to practise speaking in a small group environment with guest speakers from different cultural backgrounds. She has also hosted cross-generational student gatherings, bringing together students from different eras to share real exam experiences and life stories — building connections that go far beyond the classroom.
